    I view the rose as symbolic for life itself. The inventor tossed it out because it was wilting and certain to die just like all forms of life. When he tries to replace his wife, he's doing exactly what he did with the mechanical flower. He was replacing the beauty of organic life with something that lasts forever but still

     that there is some deeper meaning, but what I immediately thought of was the song 'The Doctor's Wife' by the Clockwork Quartet. Does anyone else see the similarity?
